#nicesocial infrastructure on the web will continue to collapse, btw. its going to domino effect forever bc as each platform burns itself down, the remaining players will decide they must gain all these displaced users at any cost - something that inherently means making the exact same mistakes as everyone else.
here's the thing: social media is a Service. its Infrastructure. it isn't built to generate a profit and inherently can't unless you're willing to turn it into a farming operation for data, and even then the margins don't seem great.
so the line is always the same: We Need More Users. always more users. we promise if we get more users we'll start making money, honest, please approve our next vc cash injection and you'll see an N% increase in users this quarter i swear.
i wanna believe in an outside player like cohost, but they too make absolutely no money and rely on cash injections. as long as infrastructure is expected to generate revenue instead of being what it is, a Service, it will continue to collapse under the weight of its own decaying supports.
literally the Solution, the long-term solution, is social media should be nationalized. yes, its the place you make posts. but its also vital socioeconomic and sociopolitical infrastructure servicing hundreds of thousands of people.
entire lives and livelihoods are dependent on it, and it is ultimately at the whim of a handful of investors and advertisers who do not understand the utility of the services they are responsible for outside of how much they can make the line on their chart go up.
is this going to happen? of course not we don't live in the good universe. but it is what's required, and anything less means that we will continue along this path, generating herds of migrating users constantly seeking stability where none can exist
